Relationship Management
by Kathy Gantz, MSW

Relationships take nurturing, maturity and skills. Start today by noticing your behavior and deciding to do one thing differently.

  1. In a good relationship, each person feels a greater sense of energy and vitality.

  2. Each person has an accurate picture of himself and the other person.

  3. Each person feels a greater sense of self worth.

  4. Each person feels more connected to his or her partner and to other people.

  5. In a good relationship, avoid name-calling, blaming or accusing.

  6. Be open to self-discovery with yourself and your partner.

  7. Ask yourself, am I in a place to listen with openness?

  8. Know that your partner is a separate and different person with his or her own thoughts, ideas and feelings.

  9. Focus on one issue at a time when discussing what’s bothering you.

  10. Do one thing for your partner every day.

  11. Give each other legitimate compliments.

  12. Think of we and not I.

  13. Always give a little more than your friend or spouse.

  14. Celebrate little occasions with surprises such as cards, a song, bake cookies, and a surprise phone call. Hang notes with little sayings on the mirror.

  15. Smile and be happy and then you can do what a happy person does and that is to have what you want.

  16. Develop yourself by reading the paper, taking a course, or developing a hobby.

  17. Plan a fun night out like bowling, dancing or hosting a party.

  18. Don’t criticize; describe the behavior.

  19. Talking is overrated. Keep some things to yourself.

  20. Never go to bed angry.
